Unequal Treaties

The treaties resulting from the Opium Wars are called unequal since they were not negotiated but rather imposed on China. Mostly, the treaties forced China to pay large amounts of reparations, open up ports for trade, setting up of foreign embassies etc.
The first treaty is the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842 after the First Opium War, resulting in opening up five ports to foreign trade, while also allowing foreign missionaries to reside within China.
